Alto Sangiovese 2019/2020 Rosso Toscana Azienda Petra

In the Maremma, it is too warm in many places for Sangiovese cultivation, in contrast to the higher-lying areas such as Montalcino or Chianti Classico. Vittorio Moretti looked for plots where the original Tuscan grape could thrive. Alto, high, is the name of Petra's single-varietal Sangiovese. After a cold maceration and a long maceration in 10,000-liter wooden vats, the wine is aged for 18 months in 600-liter oak barrels. It takes again that long before the first bottles are put on sale. The Alto shows earthy notes on the nose and smells of jam, cocoa and ripe cherries. Minerality is noticeable on the palate, with tannin shaping the balanced body. The rich, well-structured red wine can be stored for an exceptionally long time.
